What is the difference between a DVD player, decrypter, decoder, drive, etc.?

Hi! I'm getting a netbook soon, and it doesn't come with a built-in DVD anything. If all I want is to be able to watch movies by popping a DVD in, which of the above is in my best interest?

Thanks a bunch,

Wendy

usually u can play your dvd with "vlc media player" which is a free programme that plays almost any type of video and audio file. u can get it here: http://www.videolan.org

so really if all u are going to do is play dvds this will suffice. of course u need a dvd drive on your netbook.

the difference between the items u mentioned is this:

player is either software or hardware that plays back prerecorded dvds.

a decryptor is software that allows u to rip the dvd to your hard disc so u can either make a copy or play it on your computer without the original disk being inserted.

a decoder is sometimes confused with a decryptor but is actually just the codec that decodes the mpeg2 stream which is what the programme material of a dvd consists of.

drive u should know....it is the physical device that u insert the disc into. What is the difference between a DVD player, decrypter, decoder, drive, etc.?
A dvd player will let you watch the DVD as is. If your planning on downloading movies then you need a movie player like divX
