i have ubuntu 10.04 soon ubuntu 10.10 will be coming out i want to save/clone my ubuntu system configuration to a cd so if something goes wrong with ubuntu 10.10 i want to install ubuntu 10.04 on my pc just like i left it with all the apps and updates installed on it is it possible to do something like this ?How to clone ubuntu system on a cd or dvd?
Definitely possible. I always do that. Would you be able to create a separate partition for 10.10? This way, you retain your original and install ubuntu to the new one?
If not, do you have a USB drive or an external drive or some space on some other partition on your disk. If so, use the tool called clonezilla from a liveCD that is free of cost and does the cloning for you.
Are you familiar with the "tar"command in linux. If you are, then you could just tar (kinda' like zip) up the entire ubuntu installation and store it in a DVD or on an external USB drive. I use this method.
Also try a tool called 'remastersys" . It does exactly what you want. Create a liveCD of your customized installation.
If you are familiar with commands like "dd" or "ddrescue", you could clone your entire partition or even your disk to another one.
Remember that Ubuntu one is a cloud where you can store the compressed image of your entire install if it is %26lt; 2GB. Same with Dropbox. How to clone ubuntu system on a cd or dvd?
Here is an alternative for you to consider. It's a tool for Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) that backs up your software selection and your home folder to an external drive. Once you install 10.10, you can use it to install all of your software that you use in 10.04. And if you have any problems with 10.10, you can reinstall 10.04 and restore all your software and personal files. How to clone ubuntu system on a cd or dvd?
You can do this by creating a custom LiveCD/DVD using a piece of software called Remastersys
