Video tapes lasted for quite a while and then dvd's came but didn't last quite as long...?

...now bluray (and they are already talking of a newer format coming soon after); are things going too fast these days? Video recorders are still being used by some people. Why are format changes coming so quickly these days? With the recession, isn't it a bit much that we are expected to get rid of our video tapes and replace them with dvd's and now bluray and soon something else? Is bluray going to be a bit of a fad that doesn't really take off (bit like lazer discs - remember them?) because of it's non-longevity? Are the people who make these changes perhaps expecting a little too much of us? Are they taking the p*ss a little? Or am I just getting old?Video tapes lasted for quite a while and then dvd's came but didn't last quite as long...?
DVDs are steal here, and will still be around for a few years yet. I'd bet that they will still be around for the next decade. There is no reason to get rid of your DVD collection and equipment.

If you do want to get a blu-ray player, you can play your regular DVDs on it.

If you are worried about the cost of Blu-ray, just skip that step and go right to an internet content service such as Netflix or iTunes.

Myself, while I wasted no time getting an HD satellite box when I got an HDTV, I got an upconverting DVD player instead with it, and will not get a blu-ray player anytime soon, at least until it becomes affordable for a player.
