Now that movies are coming out on DVD sooner, why did they take a long time before?

I'm sure most people have noticed. Now we have movies coming soon on DVD. For instance, The Departed took about 2 months to come out, if I'm not mistaken. I do see a reason why soon now. One is piracy. But my question is why did the film industry took a long time to release them on the DVD/VHS before? Now that movies are coming out on DVD sooner, why did they take a long time before?
because after the movie was done showing, they were focusing on getting people back into the theaters to see the latest 'new release'. DVD sales (before then, VHS) were seen as a minor, secondary source of income.

nowadays, they've realized no-one goes to the movies much anymore but lots of people buy DVDs! so they're pushing them harder and faster.
Maybe they want to make as much money as possible before people forget about the movie and aren't as excited about it.Now that movies are coming out on DVD sooner, why did they take a long time before?
well superman, i think it cause movies used to be so *original*,, now they are all remakes of something..
My logical explanation would be because more people are watching and buying DVD's than going to the movies. Now that movies are coming out on DVD sooner, why did they take a long time before?
Bootleggers are selling copies for next to nothing. They are trying to tap into that market and make as much money as they can.
Okay this is just my opinion so bare with me. I think in recent years there has been a slump in the box office. So I think that companies are trying to push the popular movies out on dvd while they are fresh in people's minds so that they can purchase them but also to get them out of the theater quicker so that they can release more and more movies. I don't know it's just my opinon. Money basically is my answer.
because before, people were willing to pay 5 and 6 dollars to go see a movie......

the longer they kept the movie in the theaters....the more money they made.....

now? forget it........movies are a luxury to some people ( especially those with children )

if people aren't going to the theaters....then, you have to get them to pay to see your movie some other way.....
They want to make as much money from the DVD release as soon as possible, and it it is still fresh in the public's mind, advertising can be kept to a minimum
